I favor required registration of all guns but do not favor confiscation of any.  I think selling AK-47s and their equivalent should be stopped.  There is no use for them in hunting or self protection.  Selling or possession of ammunition that penetrates body armor that police wear should be banned.

The problem is the 2nd Amendment is in place, not only for personal protection, but for protection against governments. Gun registration is about to be proved a serious problem as President Obama is asking the U.S. Senate to ratify the SIFTA Treaty.

This treaty, signed by President Clinton, includes a clause where the U.S. Gun registration lists would be shared by other nations. The intent is permit other nations to criminalize the American gun owners for their laws, and not ours.

The position of the Founders in the case of the 2nd Amendment is to always be able to defeat any military force (including the U.S. military, should our own government become too ambitiuos - found in Federalist #46).

I am suggesting that you read Federalist #46 to get the perspective of James Madison.

First of all, for those of you why want to follow-up on Ken's comment, the proper acronym is "CIFTA" Now, Ken -- if I were you I would be paying more attention to H.R. 45, the Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009  [The full text of HR 45 can be found at:

http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=111_cong_bills&docid=f:h45ih.txt.pdf

After having read them, I oppose both CIFTA and HR 45.  But I would be remiss if I did not point our that much of what is being said about these proposals by the bloggers represents a gross distortion of many of their provisions.  Please, everybody, a healthy debate over the issues is important, but please don't rely on what the bloggers say. Go to the source and make up your mind based on facts.

A good site to find information regarding H.R. 45 is
govtrack.us  http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-45 ,

This site is also good to track what your reps are doing. You can sign up for emails that update you on who voted for what, proposed bills, the question/answer section, and links to reps websites.

I've found that site a very helpful tool when contacting my reps here in NM.
